These are the ten longlisted titles vying for the National Book Award for 2016 in the category of poetry.
And now, off to make this new week a spectacular one. I'm sure that every writer reads something from time to time and goes, "Wow, I wish I had written that. My most recent encounter of this type came upon reading work by Shaindel Beers that appeared in Issue 4 of Whale Road Review.
The poem titled, Reading the Author After the End of Our Affair is sensual, metaphorically brilliant and unapologetic. Not surprising that Shaindel was one of 6 poets to make my 2016 Poet Crush List a couple months back. What I like about Shaindel is that she writes the kinds of poems I want to read. Rarely have I encountered a poem of hers that truly did not grab me, shake me in some way, and leave me better for the read. I seem to be having a discussion with myself about the binary existence of genders as I write this morning - somewhere between journaling and trying to write poetry. It's more akin to free writing than actual poetry draft... but it has me thinking and perhaps something will come out of it in the end.
