These are the ten longlisted titles vying for the National Book Award for 2016 in the category of poetry.
And now, off to make this new week a spectacular one. I'm sure that every writer reads something from time to time and goes, "Wow, I wish I had written that. My most recent encounter of this type came upon reading work by Shaindel Beers that appeared in Issue 4 of Whale Road Review.
The poem titled, Reading the Author After the End of Our Affair is sensual, metaphorically brilliant and unapologetic. Not surprising that Shaindel was one of 6 poets to make my 2016 Poet Crush List a couple months back. What I like about Shaindel is that she writes the kinds of poems I want to read. Rarely have I encountered a poem of hers that truly did not grab me, shake me in some way, and leave me better for the read. |
