July and early August have been hectic to say the least. My writing has been causality of my August 4th election win for a Democrat County Committee seat. I served in that capacity for 14 years in the past as well as Chairman of the county Party. It was a lot of work - a lot of very hot days and evenings, but it was successful. Winning with 61.26% of the vote.
I have managed to finish reading Blood Sisters, a collection of poetry by Jenifer DeBellis. I recommend it. Gave it 4 stars on GoodReads. Have a zoom reading tonight at 6 p.m. Central time. There is a link on my events page.

Reading and Workshop by Lola Haskins this past weekend. Her reading was very intimate - she did not read from the page, but from her heart.
Saturday's workshop allowed me to look at the possible and away from every page up to this point. This was a good thing. Attended an Open Mic tonight in Liberty, Missouri at Morning Day Cafe. Read three poems:
If only in Theory, Tiananmen Mother, and Foxtrot. Very nice turnout. Great venue. First time there. So last night was a reading at the Writers Place. Three Scheduled readers, Dawn Downey, Jeanette Powers and Hearter Derr-Smith.
Jeanette I've heard before. I've seen her do performance poetry but last night was a more traditional reading. Jeanette can funny or at that is how she often presents and most of her material was on the lighter side. She was very enjoyable. Dawn's work was more prose orientated. She from some essay material. Her language skills showed in her readings. Very philosophical in nature. Heather Derr- Smith did not make it to the reading. I don't know the reason but it was most disappointing as I've hear her work is outstanding from several sources. Additionally, she has material on her web site that is so powerful. She has a pot of personal experience to lean on when she writes and I hope to at some point in the future meet her because is increasingly talented. Her we site can be found here. |
