Small bits and pieces from my January journal--

Happy birthday to Sylvia Plath who would have been 87 today, had she lived. I wonder how many writers owe her as an inspiration for their craft? She was the first writer that I recall reading that had the ability to bend and shape language into something I recognized more powerful than just words strung together. What could she have achieved had she lived a full life of writing?
Today in the mail I received Laura Kasischke's Where Now - New and Selected poems. This is a beautiful hard bound book of like 360+ pages. The publisher is Copper Canyon Press and everything with their imprint is always crazy nice. I met Laura in Kansas City at a reading numerous years ago and bought a copy of her poetry book Gardening in the Dark. I enjoyed it so much that it catapulted Kasischke pretty high on my list of remarkable poets. Frequently I have gone back to Gardening in the Dark when I have been looking for inspiration to get me through a writing funk. It will be joyous to take another journey through her work reading material I've not seen before.
“We live our lives, made up of a great quantity of / isolated instants / So as to be lost at the heart of a multitude of things.” ― John Ashbery, Collected Poems, 1956-1987
“We live on the leash of our senses.” ~ Diane Ackerman
Read an interesting New Yorker article - Emily Dickinson's Singular Scrap Poetry. Apparently Dickinson scrawled lines on must anything she could; envelopes, chocolate wrappers.
Sometimes I kick myself for having drafts and snippets of writing less than organized. I scramble to assemble it better, but never satisfied. Wondering how others organize their writing... looking for more simplification. Any Thoughts? |
